Seawater-based magnesium (chalk) for a better future

Sustainability is very important when it comes to using magnesium. Magnesium is a finite resource that is essential for many industrial and commercial applications. As demand for magnesium continues to grow every year, it is important to ensure that we are able to meet this demand in a way that does not deplete our natural resources or harm the environment. By focusing on sustainable sources of magnesium, such as seawater filtering, we can ensure that we are able to continue to use this valuable element without causing harm to the planet. Additionally, sustainable sourcing of magnesium also helps to reduce the environmental impacts associated with mining, making it a more environmentally viable option.

Most of the worlds magnesium is still mined in big mining pits in China. Mining magnesium is harmful for the planet and people for a number of reasons. One reason is that mining often involves disturbing large areas of land, which has negative impacts on the environment. This includes soil erosion, habitat destruction, destruction of plants and animals and the release of pollutants into the air and water. Additionally, mining also have negative impacts on the people who live and work in mining communities, as it can expose them to health and safety risks, such as air and water pollution, they work under very tough work conditions and are not paid fairly. This creates economic challenges for these communities. By focusing on sustainable sources of magnesium, such as seawater, we can reduce these negative impacts and help to protect the planet and the people who depend on it.

Seawater-based Liquid Chalk without additives
At Allez! we make our Liquid Chalk locally in Utrecht, the Netherlands. For our chalk we use seawater-based magnesium and add no additives. That means no Rosin (Resin) is added to our Liquid Chalk.

Rosin is often put in Liquid Chalk (liquid magnesium) and sometimes even in magnesium blocks. The reason is that it gives a feeling of stickiness and makes making Liquid Chalk cheaper and easier because the magnesium dissolves better. Ideal you might say… However, adding Rosin actually backfires. In practice, it forms a kind of (resin) layer that prevents the chalk from doing its job properly in drying your hands. In addition, it is very harmful to the (natural) boulders.
As soon as you put Rosin on your hands, the resin warms up (due to the heat of your hands). If you then grab onto a hold, some of this resin will stay behind. The Rosin then cools down and slowly fills the pores and micro-forms of the holds. If this happens more often, little by little the texture and thus the natural friction of the holds disappears. In this way Rosin is harmful to indoor and outdoor boulders. If you care about the preservation of natural boulders, make sure your Liquid Chalk does not contain Rosin.

Climbing brushes that don’t damage boulders
Our brushes are produced in Europe. The brush hairs are made from wild boar hairs that are leftovers from controlled hunt. On the contrary to leisure hunt, controlled hunt is necessary to make sure the boar populations stay healthy and sustainable. The boar hairs are a waste product from controlled hunt and in this way all the products of the controlled hunt are used and nothing goes to waste. The handle of the brush is made of oak wood.
Boar hairs are considered better than plastic hairs for climbing brushes for a few reasons. One reason is that boar hairs are more flexible and able to contour to the shape of the rock surface, which can make them more effective at cleaning and brushing off dirt and debris. Boar hairs are also more durable and long-lasting than plastic hairs, so they can be used for a longer time without needing to be replaced, and finally boar hairs are considered better than plastic hairs because they damage sandstone boulders (like in Fontainebleau) less than other types of artifical hairs.

Sustainable packaging
Kraft paper is our choice for the packaging of our chalk. Kraft is considered a sustainable solution for packaging because it is made from renewable wood pulp, which can be sustainably harvested from forests. Additionally, kraft paper is also biodegradable and compostable, so it breaks down naturally in the environment and does not contribute to the problem of plastic pollution. Additionally, kraft paper is also highly recyclable, so it can be reused and repurposed to reduce waste. All of these factors make kraft paper a sustainable and environmentally friendly option for packaging applications.

As Magnesium is a hydrofile substance its important that it’s protected from humidity. Therefor a thin layer of Polyethylene (PE) is applied to the inside of the package to prevent the magnesium of becoming less potent. PE is easily recyclable. Polyethylene is a type of plastic that is widely used in a variety of applications, including packaging, construction, and textiles. It is known for its durability and versatility, as well as its resistance to water and chemicals. One of the key benefits of polyethylene is that it is highly recyclable, so it can be collected, processed, and used to create new products. This makes it an attractive material for many applications, as it can help to reduce waste and conserve natural resources.
For our Liquid Chalk we opted for HDPE (high-density polyethylene) flasks because its easily recycled. This means that it can be repurposed and used to make new products instead of ending up in a landfill, where it could take hundreds of years to break down. In addition, HDPE is durable and long-lasting, so it can be used over and over again, reducing the need for new materials. This makes it a sustainable choice that helps to conserve resources and protect the environment. Furthermore, HDPE packaging is lightweight and easy to transport, which makes it more energy-efficient to produce and distribute compared to heavier materials.
